Reciprocating Biomass Conversion Reactor (RBCR)
نویسنده
چکیده
The reciprocating biomass conversion reactor (RBCR) is a novel means to produce bio-oil by fast-pyrolysis whose core is a re-purposed 4-cycle internal combustion engine. An inert gas and a small volume-fraction of pulverized biomass are input into the RBCR intake, and the crankshaft is cycled by an external energy source to supply the process heat. The biomass is converted during the compression stroke, and then the bioproducts are exhausted. The cycle is: intake, compression/heating, expansion/cooling, and exhaust. This strategy is unique in its reciprocating approach and the potential benefits of the RBCR relative to the state of the art are increased efficiency, throughput, and bio-oil quality.

Introduction The reciprocating biomass conversion reactor (RBCR) is a novel means of converting biomass to bio-oil. The RBCR is a repurposed highcompression 4-stroke internal combustion engine into which a fluidizing gas and a small volume fraction of pulverized biomass are introduced, and the crankshaft is cycled by an external energy source to supply the process heat for thermo-chemical conve...
متن کاملModel of Fast Pyrolysis of a Small Volume-Fraction of Biomass Within a Gas of Transient Temperature and Pressure
A simple model and results for the decomposition of pulverized cellulosic biomass within a non-oxidizing gas of transient temperature and pressure is presented. This model is used to predict the performance of a novel thermo-chemical biomass conversion scheme termed the reciprocating biomass conversion reactor (RBCR). Calculations indicate that complete thermo-chemical conversion can be complet...
متن کاملThermochemical Conversion: Jatropha curcus in Fixed Bed Reactor Using Slow Pyrolysis
Thermochemical conversion of non-edible biomass offers an efficient and economically process to provide valuable fuels and prepare chemicals derived from biomass in the context of developing countries. Pyrolysis has advantages over other thermochemical conversion techniques because it can convert biomass directly into solid, liquid and gaseous products by thermal decomposition of biomass in the...
متن کاملKinetic modeling of cellulosic biomass to ethanol via simultaneous saccharification and fermentation: Part I. Accommodation of intermittent feeding and analysis of staged reactors.
The model of South et al. [South et al. (1995) Enzyme Microb Technol 17(9): 797-803] for simultaneous saccharification of fermentation of cellulosic biomass is extended and modified to accommodate intermittent feeding of substrate and enzyme, cascade reactor configurations, and to be more computationally efficient. A dynamic enzyme adsorption model is found to be much more computationally effic...
متن کاملBiomass Conversion to Produce Hydrocarbon Liquid Fuel Via Hot-vapor Filtered Fast Pyrolysis and Catalytic Hydrotreating
Lignocellulosic biomass conversion to produce biofuels has received significant attention because of the quest for a replacement for fossil fuels. Among the various thermochemical and biochemical routes, fast pyrolysis followed by catalytic hydrotreating is considered to be a promising near-term opportunity. This paper reports on experimental methods used 1) at the National Renewable Energy Lab...
